Synonymous with one of the finest castles in England, the seat of the former Kings of Northumbria, the village of Bamburgh has many other charms and attractions too, many of which are associated with the Outstanding Area of Natural Beauty which is the Northumberland coastline. Northumberland is one of the most rural counties of England and has an incredible wealth of natural splendour in which to indulge in all manner of outdoor activities. Bamburgh provides the ideal place to start, containing the areas grandest historical monument, some of the most delightful village surrounds, a beautiful beach and some terrific Bamburgh hotel options.

The landscape is certainly dominated by the castle, one of the most photographed and admired in the country. Built upon a rocky outcrop looking out to sea and the Farne Islands, it dates from the 12th century, although much of the original was destroyed during the Wars of the Roses. Faithfully rebuilt, beginning with Lord Crew in the 18th century and latterly by Lord Armstrong in the 19th, the castle remains today in the hands of the Armstrong family and provides one of England's premier visitor attractions. There is ongoing archaeological work being carried out in the castle grounds and opportunities for children to join in the treasure hunting fun.

Many of the buildings in the village are charming cottages which date from the 18th century, with later Victorian additions completing a picturesque scene and beautiful environment for a short break or family holiday. Any holiday plans will invariably incorporate the extensive beach, awarded Blue Flag status for high environmental standards in 2005. When the tide is out the shoreline is a mile from the edge of the village and the beach extends the three miles to Seahouses, giving ample opportunities for taking a long beach walk. Behind the beach are the Bamburgh Dunes, a site of special Scientific Interest containing rare and important fauna and flora. Any Bamburgh accommodation will have all the visitor information on the local sights and attractions.

The lovely historic appeal of the village is reflected in the accommodation options and a Bamburgh hotel is likely to blend the grand character of a Victorian or older property with the warm hospitality which so defines the ambience of the village. Such hotels provide comforts and luxuries in equal measure, with spacious rooms and suites bedecked in period style furnishings complemented by the latest amenities in television, telephone, hospitality trays and often WiFi internet access too. There will certainly be terrific restaurants and guest lounge areas, often looking out to sea and any assistance in making a stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, from providing local information to bookings for activities such as golf or boat trips to the Farne Islands.

There are additional Bamburgh hotel options which although not in the heart of the village occupy some stunning rural landscapes close by. These are the country houses of Northumberland, many of which have been transformed into some of the best hotels in the country. They are certainly luxurious, with all the services and features which mark out such grand and historic properties but they are wholly functional too and offer a raft of leisure facilities often including indulgent spa and fitness centres and outdoor sports such as tennis or golf. They are primed for hosting major events too such as business conferences and weddings and will have dedicated event management teams to ensure the smooth running of any event.

While such a luxury Bamburgh hotel will have a very obvious appeal, many visitors to the village may be simply looking for the best base from which to enjoy the incredible range of local and wider attractions and activities. There are comfortable and well appointed budget hotels ideal for the purpose.
